SEMINAR DETAIL'S

Seventy seven Seminars/Workshops listed below have been held till now under the aegis of the Centre.

Seminars/Workshops/Meeting organised during 2006-2007

During the year 2006-2007, five Indo-French Seminars/Workshops were jointly organised by Indian and French coordinators fulfilling the objectives and goals. These were held on due dates as planned.

Indo French Workshop on "Molecular and Organic Devices", May 22-24, 2006, Lille, France

The R & D activities in the field of Molecular/Organic Devices are maturing fast internationally. Development work is being conducted in growing number of Laboratories in France as well as in India covering topics such as photovoltaics, LEDs, Molecular Transistors and Electronics, Sensors and Biosensors, etc. The Workshop was organised for having in depth exchange of information exclusively devoted to this subject between the active French and Indian groups for mutual benefit and further growth in a cohesive fashion.

The Workshop provided the participants a direct exposure to the French Laboratories at Lille, where the accent is on the development work of self-assembled molecular devices. A booklet containing Abstracts of Presentations and Programmes was available in advance.

Indo French Workshop on "Bio-Nanotechnology"

Indo French Workshop on "Bio-Nanotechnology" was held on 21st August 2006 at Hyderabad between scientists from India and France who are working in the area of Bio Nanotechnology.

The idea of holding this Workshop was to build a network between scientists and industries from India and France with the expectation that such a collaboration would result in a tangible technology which could be used by Indian and French industries.

Several scientists from academia and industry were invited. Presentations by the industries were followed by Brain Storming Session.

The Workshop was conducted by Dr. Javed Iqbal, Distinguished Research Scientist and Head Discovery Chemistry, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. Hyderabad.

As a follow up of this workshop, a Seminar on "Nanoparticles for Drug Delivery" has been planned under the aegis of the Indo French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research.

Indo French Workshop on "Mobile Multimedia"

Indo French Workshop on "Mobile Multimedia" was held in Nice, France during November 15-17, 2006. About 25 Indian and French scientists participated. The objective of the workshop was to encourage collaboration between Indian and French Academia and industry. The workshop was valuable for the inputs shared amongst Indian and French participants. A CD containing copy of the presentations made at the Workshop were sent to the participants so that the material could be useful for focalising the ideas for collaboration.

Indo French Training School on "Optical Astronomical Observations" February 12-26, 2007, Pune, India

An Indo-French Training School in Optical Astronomical Observations was organised at IUCAA, Pune during February 12-26, 2007. The school was aimed at to provide efficient training to research scholars, and young faculty members in optical astronomical observations and data reduction directly at the telescope. In all, there were 16 participants, 13 from India and 3 from France. There were 4 lecturers from France and 7 from India.

The 16 participants were divided into 4 groups and each group was given an observational project, supervised by an astronomer. Each group observed at 2-metre telescope of IGO, for one night. The complete data reduction of these observations was carried out by each group. One the last day of the school, every participant presented the results obtained by him/her.

During the last week of the school, evening talks were arranged on current observational facilities. The topics were: GMRT, From Galileo to ELTs, Astrosat and UVIT, FUSE mission and Virtual Observatory.

The lectures included: Telescopes, Detectors and their caliberations, Atmospheric effects on observations, Astronomical observations, Astronomical spectroscopy, Astronomical photometry, Surface photometry, Archival data, Image analysis and Polarimetry.

The observational projects were: Active galaxies and deep fields, Spectroscopy of planetary nebulae, Surface photometry of elliptical galaxies, and Polarimetry of T-Tauri stars.

Michel Dennefeld of IAP, France was the French coordinator of the school. Vijay Mohan of IUCAA and S.K. Pandey of Pt. Ravi Shankar Shukla University, Raipur were the Indian coordinators of the school.

Indo French Workshop on Scilab: A high productivity tool for numerical computations. March 7-8, 2007, Mumbai, India.

Scilab is a state of the art computational environment. It uses well established numerical engines, such as, linpack, eispack, odepack, and dassl. As a result, the users can be assured of getting correct answers to even difficult computational exercises. Because of the high level interpreted language available in Scilab, programming can be done efficiently.

Scilab is free and it is a good substitute for the commercial equivalent Matlab. Matlab has become extremely expensive and hence has gone out of reach of many especially, the students in India. Even the companies are finding Matlab to be prohibitively expensive.

Use of Scilab will bring high quality computing to within reach of students. One of the shortcomings of Scilab is the shortage of applications. Popularisation in India will introduce Scilab to the large work force, namely, the students, through whom a large number of applications can be developed. Scilab, being a free software, has some limitations in the number of toolboxes available in various domains. Participation in its development by the large numbers of CS/IT students in India will help expanding the capabilities of Scilab.
